This is the old Versailles Hotel on 35th St Miami Beach.. hopefully on its way to a no expense spared restoration. This wonderful mosaic by Jack Stewart wraps across the west and south sides of the building.
I've lived here for 29 years and didn't notice the mural until recently. This stretch of Collins Ave between 23rd St. and the Fountainbleau at 42nd reminds me a little of the beach when I first moved here in 1983. It must be the mixture of rundown beauty and gorgeous ocean.
Until 1982 this beauty was the restaurant at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The sculpture 'Fountain of the Muses' by Carl Milles in the pool, decor by Dorothy Draper. I would eat lunch here in the 70's whenever I visited the museum which was pretty often.. the atmosphere was delicious.. fountains roaring and mist clouding the place. I remember how stunned and disappointed I was visiting NYC years later to find the restaurant gone after a major renovation. Today I found out that beautiful sculpture was sold to Brookgreen Gardens in South Carolina. I can't wait to visit and commune with those muses again.
